There are many new areas to explore within the Desert of Flames. Within, you will find information on the city—Maj'Dul—and the two main regions—The Sinking Sands and The Pillars of Flame—for you explore in our first expansion. Keep in mind that the lore here is speculative, and is based on the beliefs of some, but not all, Norrathians.

Maj'Dul

Maj'Dul is the contested and dangerous city of the dervish people. Perched atop the central mesa of the Desert of Flames, this city walks the edge of lawlessness and anarchy at all times. Only through the sheer power of Mudeef and the Sha'ir can any semblance of peace be maintained. You can access the headquarters of the warring courts of Maj'Dul within the city.

The stronghold of the Dervish sultanate, Maj'Dul sits high up on a massive mesa. Its precincts can only be accessed by a variety of treacherous routes (including magic carpet, ledge and basket lift).

Once unified under Sultan Ahkari, the city has for centuries been the victim of the constant conflict between the three factions that seek to rule it. The streets of the city divide the lower plateaus into faction-based areas of control. While open war is outlawed (due to a self-preserving agreement between the Courts), a thick web of assassination, treachery and crime binds the citizens of the city together.

The Sinking Sands

This is the entry point into the expansion. From the docks, anyone can take the carpet ride to Maj'Dul or run across the sands to The Clefts of Rujark or The Pillars of Flame. The Sinking Sands are a broad stretch of mountainous sand dunes punctuated by the occasional oasis or impact crater. Steep cliffs cut the area off from the sea on many sides. A series of caves undercuts the cliffs to create a breeding ground for saltwater crocodiles and caimans.

To the north, the same type of cave has revealed the entrance to The Silent City, an ancient metropolis smothered by divine wrath. A handful of mesas stand guard at the region's western edge, their caves providing shelter to the Sandfang clan of jackal gnolls.

The Pillars of Flame

The Pillars of Flame is the more dangerous of the two major overland zones. The Pillars of Flame can be accessed either from inside the Clefts of Rujark or from the Sinking Sands. It is home to the two dragons Siyamak and Barakah, the Ashen Order monks and disciples, harpies, naga, goblins, and many other dangers.

The Pillars of Flame are a collection of immense scarlet-sided mesas that rise from the desert flats. On top of each, a different tale is waiting to be told. The monks of the Ashen Order have established their outpost of T'Narev on the heights of one of the larger plateaus. The prophets and desert madmen can be found on top of other mesas as they climb ever upward in search of enlightenment.
