The Chessboard has been one of the great mysteries of Norrath since Faydwer was first settled. It has always been haunted by the strange skeletons known as undead pawns, with occasionally seen stronger undead corresponding with the more powerful chess pieces - the Knight, the Bishop, the Queen, and the King (curiously enough, there is no Rook).
There has never been any lore provided by the developers - be they Verant Interactive, SOE, or Daybreak Games - regarding the Chessboard.
In the days since The Shattering, The Chessboard has fallen into ruin with several of the pieces being broken and the board covered with dirt and grass. However, where did that ruined throne come from? It wasn't there during the days of Everquest 1...
A theory posits that the chessboard may have been used by the Gods themselves - a game between Bristlebane and Brell Serilis for dominance of the Faydwer region. Brell won, and so his creations - the dwarves and the gnomes - arose in Faydwer, while Bristlebane's Halfings rose over on ancient Antonica.
