Journal Steps and Dialogue[]

  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "Our information is very limited, yet... I've heard a few rumors..."
  • Player Character: "What sort of rumors?"
  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "Rumors that, if proven true, would absolve the Outsiders of any hint that they've brought these diseases to our creatures. Have you heard of the Grender?"
  • Player Character: "The what?"
  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "The Grender is a twisted creature rumored to be half-man, half-beast. And like a parasite, it sucks the life force out of the world around it and gives nothing back in return."
  • Player Character: "Has the Grender's involvement been proven?"
  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "No, it is only conjecture. In fact, no one has proven it even exists. But if all be true, our realm would be in considerable danger. One of the Fae Royal Messengers has been trying to locate its lair. Perhaps you can aid him?"
  • Player Character: "I'll locate the Grender!"
  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "Excellent, [Player Character]. It might just be a rumor, but all rumors have some basis in fact. If nothing else, you may help disprove that the Grender even exists."
  • Player Character: "Where will I find the Fae Royal Messenger?"
  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "Speak with Kalamar Vesinger, our local Grender expert. You'll find him at Joleena's Restaurant in Kelethin. Safe journeys."
  • Player Character: "I'll let you know what I find out."

Kalamar Vesinger, a Fae Royal Messenger, is apparently one of the first to report the Grender's activities. I need to speak with Kalamar Vesinger, a Fae Royal Messenger who can be found inside Joleena's Restaurant in Kelethin.

  • Kalamar Vesinger: "Yes? How can I help you?"
  • Player Character: "Lady Katri said you might be able to help me."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "Ah, if Lady Katri sent you, I'd be more than happy to help you. What is it you need, huh?
  • Player Character: "It's about the Grender...I hear you're the first person who saw it."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "I haven't actually seen it myself, but I did some of the initial investigation into its existence. I'm sure it really exists. Some folks are skeptical though."
  • Player Character: "Why is that?"
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "For one thing, if such a creature existed, why hasn't anyone seen it before? Also, we can't find its lair. It's possible that it spreads its influence from Lesser Faydark, but then why haven't we seen evidence of disease on creatures anywhere else?"
  • Player Character: "Have the scouts been able to learn anything?"
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "We've been debating whether or not no news is good news. No recent incidents have been reported around Kelethin. However, given that only creatures near our town have been affected, it's likely that the Grender is nearby."
  • Player Character: "Sounds reasonable."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "A creature that large could only hide in a few places. Perhaps you'd help out by investigating a few of these places?"
  • Player Character: "Of course!"
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "Excellent. Here's a scroll for you. It has a list of some areas that shouldn't b e too difficult for you to reach on your own. Take a quick look around, then come back and let me know what you find out."
  • Player Character: "I'll be back."

I've spoken with Kalamar Vesinger. I should read through the scroll to see what I need to accomplish. It's in my Inventory, waiting for me to open it.

The parchment scroll describes several locations in Greater Faydark near Kelethin. Directions are given based on the three acorn lifts that gently lower folks from the city in the trees to the ground below.

The scouts have determined that there are some nearby areas which should be investigated further for evidence of the Grender. This scroll describes the locations in detail.

Tunare's Sapling is the greatest tree in all Greater Faydark. When Kelethin was rebuilt after an earlier destruction, the first platform was built on the side of this sturdy tree -- hence, it is easily reached via the Old Kelethin Acorn Lift. At its base is a small, shallow lake. Where the waters undercut the banks on the side farthest from the lift, a small alcove is formed.

Opal Pond is one of several small ponds beneath Kelethin. From the bridge leading to the Old Kelethin Acorn Lift, one can see Opal Pond shimmering below. To reach it without leaping from the platforms, ride the lift to the Greater Faydark floor, then head directly southwest. Remember to look both ways before crossing the roads!

Aquamarine Pond is one of several small ponds near Kelethin. From Joleena's Restaurant Acorn Lift, head directly northeast. Just past the platform-support tree, you will see a stand of three purple and gold mushrooms. The pond is just beyond, reflecting the endlessly blue skies of Greater Faydark.

The hills that form somewhat of a border near Kelethin are called by many different names. A small stretch of the rocky outcroppings nearest the city is called Granite Hills, and is reached by the Granite Hills Acorn Lift.

The information is concise, but gives you a somewhat clear idea of where to look.

I've read the scroll. I've spoken with Kalamar Vesinger. Now to survey the area. Apparently, the Grender is thought to be close by Kelethin. This is my chance to explore areas of Greater Faydark close to Kelethin. Search Tunare's Sapling Alcove -- this is located at the base of Tunare's Sapling and can be reached via the Old Kelethin Acorn Lift. Opal Pond -- a small pond beneath Kelethin. It is closest to the Old Kelethin Acorn Lift. Aquamarine Pond -- a small pond beneath Kelethin. It is near Joleena's Restaurant Acorn Lift. Granite Hills -- named for the outcroppings of granite that form a wall along parts of Greater Faydark, I can easily survey the area by descending in the Granite Hills Acorn Lift.

I've searched Tunare's Sapling Alcove. I've searched Opal Pond. I've searched Aquamarine Pond. I've searched Granite Hills. I've explored the locations on my list but have not found evidence of the Grender. I need to return to Kelethin and speak with Kalamar Vesinger. Kalamar Vesinger can be found inside Joleena's Restaurant in Kelethin.

  • Kalamar Vesinger: "How goes the hunt?"
  • Player Character: "I've been everywhere on the list but haven't seen anything about the Grender."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "No? That's disappointing to say the least. We did receive one more report while you were gone, but it's not particularly credible."
  • Player Character: "Why's that?"
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "The report indicates that the Grender is in Kelethin! That's absurd. And yet, how else would a creature like this be able to affect saplings and other young creatures so close to our home?"
  • Player Character: "If the Grender were inside the city, someone would sound the alarm."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "My thoughts exactly. It is possible, however unlikely, that the Grender's lair is beneath Kelethin itself. You don't recall seeing anything out of the ordinary? Anything that a creature could hide in?"
  • Player Character: "Well...there are some very large tree stumps."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "So you suspect the Grender is inside one of these stumps? Hm. This could be dangerous. Kelethin is linked to two of these stumps via bridges and platforms. If the Grender has a lair that close, we may have simply been searching for it too far away!"
  • Player Character: "I could check out these stumps for you."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "Yes...yes, that would be excellent! Search the stumps carefully. It could be that the Grender is using some soft of magical device to concentrate his influence around the city. That would certainly explain why these diseased creatures have only been seen nearby."
  • Player Character: "I'll be thorough."

I've spoken with Kalamar Vesinger and given him my report. I've spoken with Kalamar Vesinger. if the Grender is using one of the tree stumps beneath Kelethin as a base, it might be protected with some sort of magical device. The Grender's presence might be clearly indicated by some sort of magical device that he can use to focus his power beneath Kelethin. I'll carefully check around each of the main tree stumps below Kelethin.

I've located the Grender's magical devices. The Grender's magical totems were at the base of a particular stump. If there is an opening carved into it, I should climb up and explore it a bit further.

I've destroyed the Grender Guardian! I've located and destroyed the Grender's magical defenses and met up with the Grender Guardian. Having located the Grender's lair so close to Kelethin, I need to find out what I can do to help eradicate this creature. I need to report back to Kalamar Vesinger. He'll be in Kelethin at Joleena's Restaurant.

  • Kalamar Vesinger: "Any news, [Player Character]?"
  • Player Character: "I located several magical devices and destroyed them."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "Ah...so the latest reports were true. Which stump is that beast using as its lair?"
  • Player Character: "The central stump."
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "[Player Character], I want to thank you for your assistance. I admit that I was hesitant when you first offered to help us, but you've proven me wrong. I'm sorry for thinking that all Outsiders are bad news."
  • Player Character: "I understand. what can I do to help now?"
  • Kalamar Vesinger: "This might be beyond what Lady Katri had intended when she sent you to me. Perhaps you should check with her to see if she will allow you to assist us further. She will be working with other newcomers and Rite of Passage applicants near the Old Kelethin Acorn Lift."
  • Player Character: "I'll do that."

I've spoken with Kalamar Vesinger. Kalamar suggested I should speak with Lady Katri Eloranta as the task of hunting down the Grender may be beyond what she expected me to do.

  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "Hello again, [Player Character]! Have you learned more about the Grender?"
  • Player Character: "Apparently, it really does exist -- and it's using one of Kelethin's tree stumps as its lair!"
  • Lady Katri Eloranta: "The Grender using one of our own trees as its lair is very bad news. When something is close to you, you tend to overlook it. This creature must be dealt with, and swiftly!"

I've spoken with Lady Katri. I've spoken with both Kalamar Vesinger and Lady Katri.

Though I searched the locations on the list, I was unable to find the Grender. However, after following through on additional information that Kalamar Vesinger received, I discovered this creature's lair -- beneat the city of Kelethin itself.
