Please use this page to discuss the new Skin+Ads at Wikia.

PLEASE remember that we have little control over this.
We can fix what we can and relay the rest to the staff.
If you have a general complaint/comment about the changes, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE, go here.
Keep it civil, keep it clean. CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM PEOPLE!

First, let me say I like the column tags they're adding, I'm sure there will be some good uses for them. The main page changes.... Fixed width I can sort of see, since it'll standardize the MPs for all the wikia sites in a way, but I just wonder what that gutter is going to look like on some larger resolutions, also considering that it'll mean the MP looks different from all other pages which will expand to fill. I can live with the one box ad in regular pages (although personally I'd prefer a normal banner outside of the "content pane" although based on what they said there may be a "table trick" to turn it into a banner, if the page warrants it), but on the main page I think having that AND a banner is overkill. The example they give just makes it look so commercial: more about making ad money then serving its community. Not to mention it replaces the current rectangular content area with one that has a corner taken out of it... meaning the current EQ2i MP layout will likely have to be revised in order to fit with the new shape.
My personal recommendations on that would be to bump the statistics to page bottom and condense the quick links into two lines perhaps, in order to fit. Then, I'd have the news be column-left, popular areas set down column-right below the ad and fit the other two boxes as they can be.
Oh, before I go... on a mostly unrelated note, I'd like to put my "vote" in that I dislike the new random image thing... I think it makes it too small and/or clips the image (I take it it's calculating image scaling based on the height? For wide images (example: Image:An_elemental_essence_well.jpg) it's being clipped on the left/right). It also seems to be incorrect when it starts (today, for me it starts on the kobold showing but linking to the censer of mystic rights. After enough time has lapsed it successfully flips itself to the kobold being linked while it still being shown, and then proceeds fine from that point on). OK, thats my... large bag of cp ;) --Lordebon 02:39, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Because of these new add changes I am no longer able to view the AA trees, all I can see now is adds. Please change this as it has ruined the site. -J

working on this now. Uberfuzzy 13:53, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
i made a try on Category:Warrior AAs and i can see it there again now -- Chillispike 13:56, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
on the try i made, i used <center> on top and a </center> and buttom and i saw the image in the middle. Still can't see it atm with the change to wikitable -- Chillispike 14:14, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
what browser/version? what skin/theme? can you take a picture? i'm seeing it fine --Uberfuzzy 14:16, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Crazybrowser/Internet Explorer 6.0
Skin: Wikipedia skin - MonoBook
Looks like: (Just delete it later) = Image:Warrior aas chillisview.jpg
-- Chillispike 14:25, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
Suggestion: remove the <center> from Template:AACatTop and write it into the AAs side directly. I think wikia doesn't like the use of html codes over templates :/
works on preview when i use {{AACatTop|class}} <center> in the first line of the page -- Chillispike 14:47, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

ok, lets back up here.

  • thats not monobook, its Monaco.
  • it worked fine in both my firefox2 and even regular ie6, so i'm not sure why/when it broke.
  • crazybrowser is a very very odd peice of software, its nothing more then the ie engine wrapped in a better inface, so i dont know why its not working the same as IE.

try Category:Warrior_AAs now

Works fine now.
Yeah my prefence said monobook, but when i changed to monaco for a check it looked the same, when i went back to monobook i had a diff look :/.
Yes Crazybrowser uses the engine of the internet explorer for the pages, before i posted here i looked with internet explorer alone too, was the same look 1:1.
  • points at IE* "he was it" :)

Request re: sidebar when editing[]

This is something I meant to get around asking for earlier... but, anywhoo... would it be possible to get part of the sidebar (left side) back while editing? Namely, at least the main nav box w/ search? It's much harder to cross reference things and such since I have to first open a different page to get it back (or just keep one open). --Lordebon 00:50, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

if your seeing the editing tips widget on the side, or the edit box is all the way across, there should be 2 links at the top of the edit area "Show/Hide Editing Tips - Enter/Edit Widescreen" that will change the edit mode on the fly. in the preferences theres an option to turn that off by default. go here then turn ON Do not show editing tips. --Uberfuzzy 03:31, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
Ahh yeah, I saw the Hide Editing Tips but it was a pain to hit it every time I wanted to see the main menu. I didn't see that option in the preferences before - thanks! --Lordebon 11:25, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Bug?: Box google ads on editing[]

Perhaps I understood wrong, but aren't edit pages only supposed to have the banner? The box ads (ie google ads) on edit pages severely mess up the pages while editing, at least using the in-game browser (because it's width is so small normally, I believe). --Lordebon 16:53, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Example of what I'm talking about: Image:Lordebon_Ads.jpg --Lordebon 17:06, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
ok, thats very strange. ive passed the image on to the techs. i wonder if its something with the ingame browser acting strange, but i doubt that. i'm betting its something with the edit tips mode and the way the ads are floated/positioned.
to answer your first statement, no, edit previews are subject to the same analysis as normal pages, some will get boxes, some banners. see the Wikia's New Style page on central for the overview on how its picked. Because of the way our templates are done, EQ2i has an abnormally high rate of banner vs boxes.
see the other question, for how to turn off the edit_tips, see if that helps, if stops that over lapping, that will help find the problem.
--Uberfuzzy 03:59, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
I'll try and check in-game when I get done work today to see if turning off the edit tips helps. --Lordebon 11:25, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
