Gather 10 sturdy wood planks along the coast (they often break when you pick them up, ratio approximately 2:1 - I got 10 strong planks and 19 failures). Fly around the outside of the island rather than down the valleys. (note: I found the best concentration of these planks on the far east and northeastern sections of the island.)
Although the entire island is a potential location for the wood, I had the best luck finding the "sturdy wood planks" scattered along the water's edge on the island.
