Journal Steps and Dialogue[]

The dialogue of this quest varies only slightly depending on your dialogue choices.

  • Whittier: "Oh, dear. Oh, dear! What will it take for them to see the trouble at our roots, barkless one?"
    • Player Character: "What trouble?
      • Whittier: "There are orcs gnawing and burning Kelethin's roots. They are waging war upon the Faydark, and my treant brethren are not helping to defeat them!"
    • Player Character: "Who are you speaking of?"
      • Whittier: "My treant brethren, [Player Character]. They should be here helping to defend the great city of Kelethin against the orcs. They are waging war upon the Faydark!"
  • Player Character: "You are the only one?"
  • Whittier: "There are a few others, but they are all who're left of the leafy gatherers who set root near Outer Stump. The orcs killed so many when they broke soil there for their camps."
    • Player Character: " I am sorry to hear that.
    • Player Character: "What can we do?
  • Whittier: "What will it take for the multitude of others within Treant Grove to see the sun? Must flames be licking their branches or blades be tasting their sap?"
    • Player Character: "Let's hope not!"
    • Player Character: "Sometimes it is hard for others to see a threat until then."
  • Whittier: "I must try once more. I refuse to give up hope, [Player Character]. Will you carry a message to Mossmane within the Treant Grove? His rings are many."
  • Player Character: "Gladly, Whittier.

I should speak with Mossmane, an ancient treant within Treant Grove. Speak with Mossmane.

  • Mossmane: "Who disturbs my roots?! You assume yourself worthy of being shaded by my boughs?"
  • Player Character: "No, ancient one."
  • Mossmane: "No. And why would you?! what leaves I can grow are curled and brown. My only company is the termites crawling through my rough and patchy bark."
  • Player Character: "Whittier sent me."
  • Mossmane: "Did he now? And did he send you with refreshing spring water for my roots, or sticky tongued goko lizards to relieve me of these crawling pests?"
  • Player Character: "No, unfortunately."
  • Mossmane: "Then I will have none of it! Begone! He has spent too many rings surrounded by the fae folk to care of the sickness that has taken hold of us within Treant Grove. Look around, fleshy one! Disease and sickness surrounds you, and it has not spared us tree folk. Take that message back to Whittier."
  • Player Character: "I will tell him."

I have spoken with Mossmane. I should return to Whittier, the treant back at Green Knoll. Speak with Whittier.

  • Whittier: "What did Mossmane have to say, [Player Character]? Is he uprooting the grove against the orcs?"
  • Player Character: "No, Whittier. They are all sick."
  • Whittier: "I did not know of this. What ails them? Is it in their leaves, their roots or their bark?"
  • Player Character: "It is everywhere. They are all diseased. Many of the creatures of the grove are sick, too."
  • Whittier: "Then we must help them! Not only will they then be healthy but it will convince them to help us in return."
  • Player Character: "I think we should."
  • Whittier: "I am refreshed to hear you say that, [Player Character]. I understand that this weight is not for your boughs to carry. It is mine. Thank you for your help."
  • Player Character: "You're welcome."

I spoke with Whittier and told him of the troubles within Treant Grove.

Whittier had no idea that his brethren within Treant Grove were corrupted. No wonder they were not answering his call for help defending Kelethin. they were not able to, even if they wanted to.
