EQ2 character classes are organized in a symmetrical hierarchy with twenty six classes total. There are four major archetypes of classes: Fighter, Mage, Priest, and Scout.
With game update 48 eighteen of twenty six are neutral, meaning you can create them to reside in either an evil or good city. The remaining eight are restricted to either to good and evil home cities, respectively.

Those considering betrayal from an good city to evil or vice versa should be aware some classes are required to switch their class, while neutral classes can chose to change or retain their class. See the Betrayal Timeline for details.
There are also many class groupings that have been defined by the community over the years and are commonly used when referencing groups of classes. A group may ask for a "Plate Fighter" or "Non-Chain Healer" for example. Note that terminology may vary between servers and change over time. Classes Through the Years
The class system evolved over time since EQ2's release and this can cause confusion sometimes when talking about classes. At launch, all players began as Commoners and would choose either Good (Qeynos) or Evil (Freeport) during character creation. The player would not choose the initial archetype for their character until completing the tutorial and arriving on the beach of the Isle of Refuge. An intermediate "class" was chosen at level 10, and then finally their "subclass" at level 20. For example, the predator class of the scout archetype would consist of the subclasses assassin and ranger. This gradual choice system was removed in GU19 in favor of choosing a subclass directly at character creation.
Today there are few references to the original class system remaining. The term "class" today normally refers to what was originally the player's subclass (e.g., Assassin). Influence of the original hierarchy can be seen in areas such as the shared AA trees and in the choice of class following betrayal. Tradeskill classes, unlike adventurer classes, still follow the original gradual choice method with players starting as an artisan, selecting one of three intermediate tradeskill classes at level 10 and picking a final tradeskill class at level 20.

- Tradeskill Classes: Your character actually has two classes: an Adventure class and =, if and when you chose to take a trade, a Tradeskill (Crafter) class. Your Tradeskill class has its own experience bar and earns its own levels. You can see these in your Persona (Character) window by pressing C while in-game.
